The Tramonto Spaventoso T-shirt is a limited edition by the German painter Albert Oehlen (b. 1954, Krefeld, Germany), a key figure in contemporary art since the 1980s. By bringing together abstract, figurative, collaged and computer-generated elements, his work presents an inventive blend of expressionist brushwork, surrealist gestures and deliberate amateurism.
The two-colour screen print extracts a favourite motif – the mermaid – from the series Tramonto Spaventoso produced between 2019 and 2020. The mermaid reappears in eight paintings that explore the artist's obsession with the original Tramonto Spaventoso (1940) by modernist painter, and mentor to abstract expressionists, John D. Graham. The Tramonto Spaventoso T-shirt (transl. scary pretty sunset) is printed in electric green/yellow on black and sunset red/orange on white.
The T-shirt features a heavier, sturdier feel with a higher neckline and a more generous fit (2.5cm wider than a generic T-shirt).
